Summary:
NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a qualified Senior Data Scientist II to join the Methodology and Quantitative Social Sciences Department.
The Data Science job family exists across multiple departments and provides analytical expertise that leads to important insights for a portfolio of NORC projects and strategic initiatives; the Senior Data Scientist II plays a strategic role in working with our research teams to produce valuable insights for our clients.
This position supports the development of the strategy and vision for large data analysis projects; may manage both the activities and the work product of data analysts and/or data scientists; provide input and guidance to task leaders especially regarding data acquisition, questionnaire content, data analysis, and overall data dissemination; design, develop, and deploy algorithms, models, and work flows to discover valuable information in large volumes of data from various sources; bring structure to large data sets; evaluate the data, construct models, create business applications, and work closely with organizational leaders to provide input into strategic business implications for the organization.
The Senior Data Scientist II is expected to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Applicants would preferably work from either our Chicago, IL or Washington, DC offices (full time or hybrid), but NORC will consider applications for a remote position.
DEPARTMENT:
Methodology and Quantitative Social SciencesThe Methodology and Quantitative Social Sciences department implements state-of-the-art methodologies and develops innovations to deliver reliable data and rigorous analysis to guide critical programmatic, business and policy decisions for NORC clients.
The department provides leadership throughout the project lifecycle on study design, data collection, assessment of data quality, quantitative analysis, and dissemination of results.
The Methodological and Quantitative Social Sciences department also conducts its own research and is a leader in designing and implementing rigorous, efficient methods for gathering, evaluating, and analyzing data from primary and secondary sources.
The department provides expertise and leads NORC strategy on the use of a broad range of methods and techniques, including research and experimental design, recruitment and retention, instrument design and testing, assessing data quality, evaluating measurement properties of new measures, causal inference methods, machine learning, analysis of clustered data, data visualization and use of novel data sources and technologies to improve data gathering.
The department collaborates with the Statistics and Data Science Department on areas of synergy and intersection and with all NORC subject matter departments, in addition to leading its own projects.

Responsibilities:
Identify data from multiple sources, perform analysis and recommend applications to add value to project and corporate initiatives, provide insight into important business issues and/or solve a pressing business problem.
Employ and oversee advanced machine learning/natural language processing.
Develops the platforms and tools to enhance the organization's analytic capabilities.
Work closely with project leaders on implications of the data for processes and decisions.
Recommends methodology for data management, merging, cleaning, transforming and harmonizing data.
Using a degree of creativity and latitude, develops hypotheses, designs experiments and tests feasibility of proposed initiatives.
Contributing to and reviewing code, datafiles, reports, presentations, and other deliverables.
Engage in business development activities including authoring various sections of the technical proposal.
Train and supervise staff on specific protocols and tasks.
Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Master s or Bachelor s degree in social science (with a computational social science emphasis), data science, computer science, or related field; master s degree preferred.
At least 9 years of experience (at least 12 years of experience if Bachelor's degree) in positions of increasing responsibility, working with large datasets and conducting statistical and quantitative modeling, melding analytics with strong programming, data mining, clustering and segmentation.
Strong foundation in areas of social science research, analytic methods, data engineering, machine learning, and scientific methods of inquiry.
Working knowledge of different types of data that can be sourced whether from social media, administrative or sensor data.
Working knowledge of the methodologies and technologies for integrating data.
Strong problem-solving skills, quantitative/qualitative analysis skills.
Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments to meet project needs.
Domain expertise preferred.
Experience in client communications and relationship management.
Strong technical writing skills.
Strong verbal skills and data visualization/presentation.
Ability to explain technology, techniques and approaches to others.
Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.
Strong data programming skills in statistical packages and database tools such as R, Python, SQL, SAS, Tableau, Hadoop, Hive, MapReduce and/or other large data systems.
Occasional travel to sites and business meetings.
SALARY AND
Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $157,000-$221,000.
This position is classified as regular.
Regular staff are eligible for NORC s comprehensive benefits program.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
