Featuring modern V-8 power, the dashing Thunderbird offered a more sophisticated and powerful, steel-bodied alternative to Chevrolets 6-cylinder, fiberglass-bodied Corvette.
Low, sleek and sporty, the T-Bird included an available automatic transmission, removable hardtop, and a wide array of standard and optional features.
Confirming the T-Birds successful formula, 16,155 were sold for 1955, versus just 700 Corvettes.
Mildly updated for 1956, the Thunderbird was further refined and 21,380 were sold for 1957, the last model year as a two-seater until 2002.
Ever since new, the original 1955-1957 Thunderbird has served as a true cultural icon, appropriately celebrated in 2005 as part of a commemorative stamp issue from the U.
S.
Postal Service.
This gorgeous 1957 Ford Thunderbird is a wonderful collector find, being a highly original survivor with one older and very nicely maintained repaint in Dusk Rose over Black and White two-tone upholstery.
Sold new in Denver Colorado, where it was cared for by one family for 54 years until acquired by the current owners in 2014.
This Thunderbird retains the original paint finish in the door jambs with factory stickers still affixed with 92,270 miles.
The dry mountain climate contributed to a remarkable preservation of this very original example.
Mated to a Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, the Thunderbirds D-Code 245 horsepower, 312 cubic-inch V-8 engine was rebuilt at 92,000 indicated miles.
Other desirable features include power steering, a Town & Country radio, 2-way power seat, and removable auxiliary hardtop, plus a new dash pad.
Benefiting from good service and maintenance throughout its lifetime, the Thunderbird is accompanied by a dossier of service records dating to 1964.
A recent test drive confirms the irreplaceably tight and reassuringly original feel of this true survivor, in contrast to so many restored examples on the market.
The two-seater 1955-1957 Thunderbird is an essential collector car, with a glamorous presence and a strong collector following.
