Production championed by famed New York auto importer Max Hoffman, who sensed demand for a less-costly, lightly equipped open Porsche.
Stuttgarts Reutter Carrosserie revised the Americas original bodywork and designed the Speedsters high-waisted body style, which soon became one of Porsches most celebrated designs.
Debuted in 1954, the Speedster brought the joys of Porsche ownership within reach of a wider audience with its sale price just under $3,000.
Equipped with a cut-down removable windscreen, simple bucket seats and a low-profile soft top and side curtains for weather protection, the lightweight Speedster delivered noticeably sharper performance and handling, making it an ideal and very successful dual-purpose road/race car.
Attractively finished in Black over Black vinyl cockpit, this 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster Recreation is a very enjoyable example.
During the current ownership, this Speedster has been lightly enjoyed and maintained with annual service.
Recently, the venerable 1,600 CC Volkswagen air-cooled Flat-4 engine was removed, re-sealed, reinstalled, and fitted with a dual-carburetor intake system for additional performance and Porsche-style looks to match the rest of the car.
A modern Alpine AM/FM CD stereo unit features Bluetooth connectivity and delivers additional entertainment as desired.
In addition to a tonneau cover and soft top, the Speedster is equipped with a Black canvas top-boot cover.
The interior is especially inviting with a 3-spoke, wood-rimmed steering wheel, supportive bucket seats, map pockets, factory-style door handles and control knobs, and an authentic-looking dash containing a tachometer, speedometer, and gauges.
The Speedsters curvaceous body is accented by period style bright trim, model scripts and emblems, a proper low-profile windscreen, and chrome ventilated wheels with smooth chrome hubcaps all nicely recalling the unmistakable looks and the elemental and racy character of the original Speedsters of the 1950s.
A recent test drive confirms this fine Speedster recreation delivers a nice, tight overall feel and great response.
While original Porsche 356 Speedsters routinely draw auction bids and sale prices approaching $300-$500k today, you can enjoy a fun drive with this very nice recreation at a fraction of the price, fewer worries, and much lower service costs.
